Among liberal democracies, according to political philosophy, there is a major consensus that individuals in the LGBTQ+ community should not be persecuted. Countries that seem to not be accepting of the community seem to model liberal democracies centuries ago. Our society is universally progressive, meaning progress is inevitable. This progress happens in different faces for every country. This is difference is good, however, because it consistently offers varying view points. I am just not accepting of it being at the detriment of an entire community. Pushes for the United Nations (UN) to recognize and mandate LGBT rights have been done with mixed results. A Dutch-French proposal for the UN to support LGBT rights in 2008 was an amazingly brave move. This was the first time anything related to the LGBT was every mentioned on the UN General Assembly floor. In retaliation for such a move, an Arab League backed proposal was put on the floor in opposition to LGBT rights. The Dutch-French's attempt to create a utopia of acceptance across the world was a noble attempt. However, it only served to re-solidify the dystopian reality for members of the LGBTQ+ community in the countries that the Dutch-French were trying to avoid. Luckily, the UN continues to make progress. In 2014, they begun the long awaited recognition of same-sex marriages of employees. This allows full benefits to go to UN employees, their spouses, and dependents.
